The Widow or Widower Next Door

The Widow or Widower Next Door

Most widows lead double lives. I’ve learned this because I know more widows than, probably, anybody you know. After the first few months, you ask us how we are. We say “fine,” but we aren’t. This doesn’t seem right at all! Some days are pretty good, but we never get to put the pain completely behind us. It’s always lurking around in the corner; it’s part of us now. We just learn pretty quickly that everybody gets tired of hearing about it. Any widow who is honest will tell you that, and it stays that way. Always.

The good news is that we all have learned what is really important and what just doesn’t matter that much. The dishes will wait when a grandchild clamors for attention. Relationships are crucial; a relationship with one’s Higher Power and relationships with people matter. Traffic jams? Not so much. Our joy now is found in those relationships

We prepare for school by attending Pre-K. We prepare to get our Driver's License by taking driving lessons. We got to pre-marital counseling before we wed. Nothing, but nothing prepares us for the loss of a spouse. We hope this book will get people thinking and preparing, and we hope that it will help them learn how to better help a friend or a neighbor with such a loss.  Isn’t it time to talk about it?

The Widow or Widower Next Door is a collection of stories from twenty five widows and widowers, answering twenty five questions, which reveal the unexpected reactions that we encounter, in ourselves, and particularly from those around us.

One thing is for sure. If you haven’t gone through the loss of someone as close as a spouse or a child, God forbid, the chances are pretty good that one day you will. It might be a good idea to be at least a little better prepared for it. Your world will be rocked, and remain so for a very long time.  It is part of the cycle of life that is inescapable.

It is our hope, all of ours, that we can debunk some of the false concepts that so many have about loss and give an idea, through our experience, of just what it is like. I’ve met too many, way too many, widows who think they are alone. They think that they are the only one. We especially hope to educate others who care about those with a loss, both to prepare them and to teach what really helps, and what really doesn’t.

Proceeds, after expenses, from the sale of the book will go to fund social clubs for widows and widowers. We hope, that one day, such clubs will abound across the country.
