Chapter 1
First Assignment of the Day

Monday, July 14th 8:23 a.m.
I rub the sleep from my eyes as I walk silently down the stairs to the kitchen. My mouth begins to water as the scent of pancakes and bacon flood my senses.

“Good morning,” my mom says with a smile, as she hovers over the stove.
“Good morning, Mom,” I reply, clumsily sitting down at the dining room table and begin to make myself a plate of delicious breakfast.

My dad is getting ready to walk out the door to go to work. With his briefcase in hand, he calls out, “Goodbye, I love you guys.” As he turns to go, he looks directly at me and says, “Hey, Jane, I tried to watch the news this morning, but it seems a thief has taken the remote control. If you have time between cases, do you think you could locate it for me?”

My eyes light up, and I tell him, “Of course. I will get right on it, Chief!” I shovel food in my mouth, anxiously anticipating the day’s events. Before he turns to leave, he tells me, “Maybe you can fingerprint all the usual suspects like you did last time, so we can find out who took it.” His eyes lock with my mother’s. He smiles and winks playfully at her, and swiftly closes the door behind him.

“That’s not funny, Lee!” my mother yells after him, but she is too late. I glance up at her with an expression of hope on my face. With her extraordinary mom mind-reading powers, she tells me, “I don’t think so. The ink doesn’t come off easily, and it took me forever to clean the carpets last time. I’m sorry, honey.” This disappoints me. I still feel terrible for what happened, so I decide not to argue, as I ponder the events of that dreadful day.
