Chapter One

“My First Journal – Who Am I?” My name is Dicey Whittier. I’m 10 years old, I live in St. Louis, Missouri, and I’ve just finished the 5th Grade at Waters Elementary School. I have a big brother named Anthony – we call him “Tony,” and a little sister named Camilla.

Before I go on, let me explain my long, stupid, ugly name. Everybody calls me by my real name when they’re mad, or when I’m in trouble. It’s bad enough that I have a long, stupid, ugly name, but it’s a long, stupid, ugly name that no one can say. Most people say “your-a-DYE-see” or “you-ree-dice.” It’s pronounced, “your-RID-a-see!”

Eurydice Amandla. Can you believe that? I hate my name so much! My brother’s name is Anthony Marcus, and my sister’s name is Camilla Denise. I don’t know what my mom and dad were thinking when they gave me this long, stupid, ugly name. Grandma Ruthie on my mother’s side said something about them being hippies in the 60’s, but did they have to give me such a long, stupid, ugly name? Everybody calls me “Dicey,” anyway.
