The Girl Who's Never Had A Valentine

I loved Saturday morning, an indulgent lie in and no work. I’d managed to haul myself out of bed by 9 o’clock and was sitting in my small kitchen listening to Sounds of the 60‘s on Radio Two, hot cup of tea in hand, leisurely flicking through missed calls on my phone, when I heard the mail fall to the mat. One item stuck out amongst the brown bill-type envelopes and the usual junk mail; it was pale lilac. The hand writing was quite flamboyant, swirling, artistic, not a hand I recognised. Black ink.

The post mark was smudged and I could just about make out the date 13th Feb. and the stamp was 1st class, must be local. Then the penny dropped; today was 14th February and yes it was Valentine’s Day. I felt a little shaky, thinking this could be my very first, genuine, real Valentine’s Day Card. How silly! Casting the other mail to one side I extracted the sharpest knife I owned from the knife block and sliced open the envelope, making sure not to damage the contents.

Decent quality paper, they hadn’t scrimped on the cost. Carefully, I pulled the card out. It was a blended, vibrant mix of cerise and purple, very gaudy. On the front, dead centre was a champagne glass and a cute little kitten, arranged around a huge silver heart with elaborate italic gold and silver writing – it read,

“Be my Valentine.” I was just a little bit dumb struck and my mouth was probably agape. I gingerly opened the card, hoping against hope that there might be more, and there was. Again in the same gold and silver writing;

‘You set my heart on fire,
You are the Object of My Desire’
Good God!! It was so cheesy! so smarmy! such a cliché! … it was wonderful. The handwritten part read, ‘I’ll love you forever,’ the same handwriting as the envelope. Who was this person? I had no idea, I wasn’t sure that I knew anyone so sentimental, so utterly love struck. It was such a shock. Looking at the calendar stuck on the fridge I double checked – yes it was Valentine’s Day and I’d totally forgotten.

The Girl Who’s Never Had A Valentine Description:

All Beth’s ever had on Valentine’s Day is unwanted junk mail and unpaid bills! But this year, when the post lands on her doormat, one item in particular catches her eye…

Could this be Beth first ever genuine Valentine’s Day card?! The handwritten card might be a cheesy cliché….but who cares! The big question is – who is it from?
