Tell us something unexpected about yourself!

Somewhere deep inside of me there's a poet longing to break free. Perhaps that's why I always add a poem to the beginning of every book I write, giving the reader a peek into the twisting, turning tale they're about to experience. One day, I just might pick up a pen and spend some extra time and energy compiling a book of poems about my amazing life and the people I've had the privilege to meet.

What kind of books do you write?

My favorite genre? Action-packed romantic suspense. I wrote an inspirational novel as well a few years ago, but seem to enjoy the dynamics of creating mysteries and thrillers more.

What inspired you to write?

I had a wonderful English teacher in the 6th grade who insisted that I keep a journal, writing down thoughts, short stories and poems. I maintained this practice for years and found it a remarkable tool when my children grew up and went their own ways, leaving me behind to reinvent myself.

What makes your writing stand out from the crowd?

I tend to write in the third person with rotating points of view and love to keep the action building and readers guessing as to who the good guys and bad guys are until they reach the final pages in my books. It becomes a bit of a balancing act to maintain several points of view until my characters' stories collide, but the results capture the imagination and definitely make my stories unique.

What is the hardest part of writing – for you?

The hardest part might be separating myself from an ongoing project for vacation time with my family and then attempting to reengage my thought process, direction and dedication to a story.

Where do you like to write – what is your routine?

I have a wonderful library space in my home where I can turn my imagination loose. My writing routine consists of checking emails, posting a few lines or photos on social sites, and reviewing my previous typewritten pages before jumping in and working steadily from 10am – 3pm.

What do you do when you are not writing – do you have a day job?

When I'm not writing, I oversee my non-profit foundation and annual blanket concert event, which generates funds for a children's hospital and cancer research center. In addition, I have a second home in southern California and travel there from Oregon on a monthly basis. And when I'm not traveling, networking or fund-raising, I also enjoy gardening, interior designing, fine wines, gourmet dining, and socializing with friends and family members.

Do you work with an outline or just write?

I typically get an idea in my head and then create a brief synopsis. From there, I simply write by the seat of my pants and self-edit as I go. It might slow me up a bit to focus on my corrections, but it also makes a second or third editing review much easier.

What advice would you have for other writers?

Write with passion for your characters and adventures they take and not for the perfectly written words. They come at the most unexpected moment from the mouths of the heroes you create.

How important is marketing and social media for you?

It's very important to get the word out about your projects, completed books and new releases. How else would anyone know you exist, aside from your friends and family, of course.

What's your next step?

My goal, after exposing as many readers as possible to Banished Threads, is to complete the fourth book in the Threads series … Twisted Threads, which brings back interesting characters from Buried Threads and will definitely leave my readers craving the next developing story.

Kaylin McFarren is an awesome writer with a lot of depth. She takes you into the story without you realizing it and has the knack for leaving you guessing until the end. She is one of my all time favorite authors!
