Tell us something unexpected about yourself!

Well, let's see. I once practiced law and traveled to over 40 countries. I like ships and the sea and have ridden on several, both small and large. Oh, and I like to cook.

What kind of books do you write?

.
I write historical romance, Georgian, Regency and Medieval. Historical romance is also what I like to read. I like diving into the past to experience adventure and love and hopefully learn something along the way.

What inspired you to write?

Actually a best friend told me I think like a writer and encouraged me to write a novel. So I did–Racing With The Wind. I picked the Regency era to begin my Agents of the Crown series because the time period fascinated me. Now I have 7 stories out in that series.

What makes your writing stand out from the crowd?

All of my novels are historically authentic with real history and real historic figures along with my fictional characters. History is a character in my romances, not just wallpaper.

What is the hardest part of writing – for you?

Usually it's the middle of the story where I sometimes hit a wall. I don't plot but I do need a sense of the characters and what will happen to them before I begin and the history of the years.

Where do you like to write – what is your routine?

Typically I do social media for a few hours and then get to research and writing. I have taken over my dining room where I have a large table and a huge window looking out on trees. There, I can spread out my research and other things I need around my Mac desktop as I write. I don't have to clean it up at day's end either, which is nice.

What do you do when you are not writing – do you have a day job?

I used to have a day job but now I just write and interact with my readers. I do have a blog (Historical Romance Review) that gets 35,000 visitors a month and I review books…. all historical romances. I read in the evenings for those reviews.

Do you work with an outline or just write?

I sometimes work with a general description of the story and an historical timeline of events I want to include that comes from my research. I didn't like outlines in school so I stay away from them. And the idea of plotting with any serious detail seems stifling. I like to see where the story and the characters will take me.

What advice would you have for other writers?

You might take some writing classes (though I did not). And you might read some books on writing romance (I bought them but never read them). To me it's important to find the genre you love and read to get a sense of what's out there. Think about a story you'd like to write and then write it. Even if it takes you years. One of my author friends spent 10 years writing her first novel, but it won the RITA. Once it's written, I'd seek a good editor. You can't publish until you have a draft of a book in your hand.

How important is marketing and social media for you?

Important. Social media allows me to interact with my readers. I have a street team of wonderful women who like my stories and are very supportive. I'm active on Facebook every day. It's my eye candy of choice.

What’s your next step?

I want to finish my Medieval Warriors series and then go back to the Georgian and Regency eras for books I've been promising my readers. Then there's the series I want to do on the origins of Clan Donald set beginning in 12th century Scotland. Lots of plans…
