Until recently most of my working life was spent working within the music industry.

What makes your writing stand out from the crowd?

I write contemporary fiction. Sometimes it's contemporary romance with a twist of suspense, sometimes it's contemporary thrillers with a romantic twist. I like to mix it up a bit. I write strong female characters who on the surface may appear quite weak or vulnerable. Underneath however they are lined with steel. They make for interesting characters to write and hopefully to read too.

I write characters who are well and truly flawed. Just like real life, they are not perfect but they are lovable and you can identify with them. People have told me that my characters are believable, which is high praise indeed. To believe in a story or concept you have to believe in the characters. I'm told my characters provoke powerful emotions, for me again, this is high praise. If you are moved by my stories then I am happy.

What inspired you to write?

From a young age I have found reading a magical experience. Hans Christian Anderson was my childhood favorite. I still stand in awe of his writing. It was my initial passion for reading that drew me into writing. I worked for many years in marketing and PR building stories for other people so giving myself the opportunity to write books that I wanted to write was a natural progression.

What is the hardest part of writing – for you?

For me the hardest part varies depending on how the writing is going! Currently the hardest part is carving out time and making that time count. I work full time and have a busy home life. Writing is my special time that I can just let go and be… however that is not always possible and sometimes I feel as if I am running to catch up with myself. So in answer to your question right now the hardest part of writing is carving out the time.

Where do you like to write – what is your routine?

I do not really have a routine when it comes to writing. I sometimes wish I did. However, life for me is not that well organized, so I write whenever I can. I have recently converted a room into my office which is very exciting so now I write mostly there. I travel a reasonable amount so have become adept at writing in hotel rooms, on planes or on trains. I have become very good at blocking out the world and concentrating on the task in hand.

What do you do when you are not writing – do you have a day job?

Yes I have a day job. I work for a pharmaceutical company within the healthcare sector. I am also a ‘taxi driver' to my boys… I'm sure many parents know how that feels! When not working or ferrying the kids around I also have a working English Spaniel who I am trying to train to enter field trials.

Do you work with an outline or just write?

I just write. I love the freedom it gives me. I can start with a blank page and it can take me anywhere. It's very liberating. With my debut novel All Tomorrow's Parties, it started off as a straight forward romance, but without giving away any spoilers that is not how it ended up. For me this is one of the best things about writing ~ enjoying the creativity that it lets in.

What advice would you have for other writers?

Be yourself. People can give you advice to write in a certain way or to develop your story line in a certain way but that's all it is advice. You can choose to accept it or not. If it doesn't feel right don't do it. Be true to yourself and your writing will work out. So my advice would be …. be yourself, take the advice that works for you and gracefully decline the rest. Oh and try to write every day, even if it's only 1 or 2 lines, you must write write, write.

How important is marketing and social media for you?

Having worked in marketing for many years I am aware of how powerful it can be. A good campaign really helps to get your message out there to the right readers. Social media is a way of connecting with your readers which I think is awesome. It allows real time interactions & communications which in my book (pardon the pun) is a good thing. I have a blog which I update as often as I can and find it is a great way to connect with readers.

What's your next step?

I am currently working on my second novel which will be out later this year. I am also putting together a collection of short stories. Exciting times ahead…
