Today we are chatting with David Pauly the author of The Fourth Age Shadow Wars

51GephW89vL Tell us something unexpected about yourself!

I am a classically trained chef who works as a nice trial lawyer

What novels affected you the most growing up?

Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy

Where did the idea for your current book come from?

Whenever I finished a Fantasy or Sci/Fi series, I always wondered what would have happened next in the author's world. After the unlikely hero wields a mighty talisman and destroys the dark lord 700 pages later, I the reader always felt a bit crest fallen. So I set my series 200 years after the dark lord was destroyed, telling the story of Elves, Dwarves and Men, who are rebuilding their civilizations. I placed the politics of our actual world into a fantasy world, where today's current events and societal conflicts unfold between different races with different magical abilities.

Do you think there’s any way you could ever run out of ideas for books?

Not really, and I hope that does not sound arrogant. My mind wanders constantly to maybes and possibilities, which my wife and my clients find annoying and distracting. I have half of the next series already written and outlines for the next 3 series completed. Time permitting, I am researching a different genre entirely combining European legends and art history, for an alternative world novel.

What is your routine for writing and has this method changed over the span of your career?

My routine, prior to re-marriage was light some candles, put some Art Rock on the stereo (Pink Floyd, Genesis, Alan Parsons), break out the red wine and see where inspiration would take me. Post marriage and the birth of my daughter, its grab any few moments that you can and type quickly before falling asleep at the keyboard. Sadly the Art Rock has been replaced by the theme song from “Frozen” played on the TV for the umpteenth time (Let it go, Let it go…”please god let me go!!”), the candles are too dangerous for a 4 year old, and I have had to cut down my drinking for health reasons.

How important is marketing and social media for you?

Its been the hardest part of the creative process. Writing is easy, selling is hard!

What advice would you have for other writers?

Write, write some more and keep writing. Anytime you can get it out of your head an down on paper or screen its great. Even if you go back later and hate it, at least its out and your ideas have been realized. Don't self edit when you are being creative, there is lots of time in the cold light of day, literally, to edit your work.

What are you reading now?

Marketing guides

What’s your next step?

Promote the book and try to keep writing
