This week we are chatting to Michael J. Sahno author of Brothers' Hand, Jana and Miles of Files

Tell us something unexpected about yourself!

nhZNCBaAAAhDz53hfMCjDmQoboKnlpgc+EK2PvoTUBcEzMEGmLtknXGAAAAAAAAAAAI got my Master of Arts degree when I was just 24.

What kind of books do you write?

I write literary novels of a humorous bent. They're dramas, but they have plenty of comedy in them…much like my own life.

What inspired you to write?

I was a compulsive writer from an early age, writing songs and poems like crazy from about age 12-24. I started writing novels at 25. I was inspired by love, by nature, by heartbreak, by the pain and beauty of life. I wrote the way other people play sports: like my life depended on it. In fact, it did.

What makes your writing stand out from the crowd?41cLPlU%2BlHL. SX320 BO1,204,203,200

The power and beauty of my prose is something that astonishes even me at times. I also find that my dialogue is not only realistic but also quite funny in many cases. I am often amazed at what my characters say and do.

What is the hardest part of writing – for you?

The actual work that surrounds the first draft. Writers don't like to write: we like to have written!

Where do you like to write – what is your routine?

It varies, but I've written on a Mac for about the last 15 years. Other than that, there's no ritual for me.

51gurbgZ3vL. SX320 BO1,204,203,200What do you do when you are not writing – do you have a day job?

I have worked as a writer full time since 2001…so when I'm not working on my personal writing projects, I'm still getting plenty of practice honing my chops as a paid writer.

Do you work with an outline or just write?

I usually just write, then at some point go back and make a rough plan…very rough. I don't like to feel boxed into a plan, preferring to let stories form organically.

What advice would you have for other writers?

Read all the Faulkner you can, then read all the Hemingway to get the Faulkner out of your system. Read as many great novels as you can find. Forget about trends and popularity. Write for the ages.

How important is marketing and social media for you?Michael J. Sahno

Incredibly important. It's bigger than ever, and getting bigger all the time. I have done marketing writing in my career since 2001, and believe me when I tell you that social media is crucial. It's a part-time job all in itself.

What's your next step?

I've started my own publishing company, Sahno Publishing, and our motto is Written to a Higher Standard. We are accepting submissions from literary authors who haven't been well served by the publishing model that exists out there today. For more information, visit msahno.com.
