Chapter 1

Shenandoah Catt read over the documents, time and time again, with mounting excitement mixed with disbelief.

‘Could this really be true?’ she thought.

The pretty 24 year old Alabamian had been tracing her family tree since her parents died in a tragic car crash, just over a year ago. She had reached, with great difficulty, as far back as the year 1837.

It was then that she was stopped dead in her tracks by the name she saw before her. On the microfiche screen, staring out at her was the name William Quantrill. Born in Ohio on July 31, 1837 and died June 6, 1865.

Shendi, as she preferred to be called, knew her history and knew exactly who William Quantrill was. He was straight out of the Civil War; a Confederate guerrilla, and a famous one at that.

It was clear to her that her last name, Catt, had been changed from Quantrill, for obvious reasons.

That was about the extent of her knowledge of her newly found ancestor. She began reading books, watching movies, speaking to people, until she believed she knew almost all that could possibly be known about this enigmatic figure.
