In the summer of 1863, the citizens of the town of Oyster Bay, New York would find themselves profoundly impacted by the politics and the realities of the Civil War. In the month of June 1863, two young men from the town of Oyster Bay, who knew each other since they were young boys, were killed in action while fighting for the Union with the 2nd New York cavalry unit. First, James Vernon was killed at Brandy Station,

Virginia during a fierce cavalry battle on June 9, 1863. It would turn out to be the largest cavalry battle ever fought on American soil. The battle was so significant that the Union cavalry was able to establish itself as the dominate cavalry throughout the entire Civil War. Then there was Daniel L. Downing, also with the 2nd NY Cavalry unit.
