Got A Bad Picker?

Introduction

I’ve been a psychiatrist for over twenty-three years. In that time I’ve seen thousands of patients in multiple venues, all ages and conditions. Early in my practice, while working with seniors, I noticed a common theme of regret among some of my female patients–regret about their relationships and the men who caused them so much heartache.

This included the men they stayed with through the years, wishing they had left them years ago, as well as missed opportunities during their youth to be with a good man. It was sad to see so many women feeling as if they had wasted their lives and youth on losers.

I subsequently started watching and listening to my younger patients about their relationship choices and consequences. They too complained about relationship dissatisfaction, how badly their men treated them, and how hard it was to find a good guy.

It was somewhat surprising that so many nice women were choosing guys that treated them poorly, and of- ten tolerating it for a long time.

There seemed to be some sort of unconscious attraction to and weakness for these losers, despite getting very little out of these relationships.
