CHAPTER ONE

Myra struggled with thoughts of defeat in her mind as she felt the small kicks from her unborn child and struggled to keep up her normal pace. She took deep short breaths and prayed for inner strength. The steam of the hot sun permeated every inch of her dark brown skin.

Hot sweat dripped down her face into her large brown eyes and down her dry chapped lips. Her thick coarse hair was filled with dirt and small sticks. The ragged scarf tied over her hair felt like it had been dipped in hot water. It was a minor struggle just wiping the sweat from her forehead.

Her tall thin body was as frail as a rag doll by then. Her arms trembled as she struggled to move them. Her heart was crying out for an end to her struggle. It was her sheer will that gave her the drive to keep moving through the thick bush.

In the deep thoughts of her mind, she visualized her master’s evil over seer anger piercing through her soul like hot lava. She saw him standing over her beating her like she was a red devil. She still felt the tingling burns of her scars scattered all over her body. They were the eternal remnants of her agonizing life as a Negro slave.

They had been running off and on for more than a day and it felt as if there was no end to their journey. Her ragged clothing had stuck to her unhealed scars. Every breath she took, she felt like screaming out and expressing the torment of her soul. Her will to keep on was slipping as she struggled to keep her large brown eyes open.

She held on to her bulging stomach as she squeezed Johnny Lee’s large hand with all her might. The burning of her tired blistering bare feet made her daunting journey even harder as they landed down on the rugged rock and stick filled ground.

The Awakening of Myra Thomas Description:

Myra feels her last violent gasps for air as the rope ascends into the sky. Her escape from slavery has failed, her life ending in brutal pain.

Soon Karen is stalked by a woman in ragged historical clothing. She succumbs to brutal beatings by something she can’t see. Her family doctor doesn’t have answers. No one does—especially not Karen. Just what can be causing this strange behavior? Is she approaching insanity? Or is something else lurking inside?

Author Ramona Sagola Frye weaves the painful history of slavery into a modern-day story of spiritual possession in The Awakening of Myra Thomas, a gripping supernatural thriller that will leave readers racing through pages as Karen frantically attempts to discover the force ripping her sanity apart.
