Keys of Life

Keys of Life

At Master Wong’s Karate School, a slim brunette, her red-gold highlighted hair tied in a ponytail, positioned into a defensive pose.  In a white karate uniform with black belt, Cordy McDermott stood focused, her fist moving back and forth, aimed at one point on the wooden board being held tightly by the elderly Master Wong.  With lightning speed, she broke the board in half.  She swiftly pivoted her body, simultaneously producing a kick with incredible force and accuracy while his younger assistant watched the board he held split in two.  Peter Woo, dressed in a black karate uniform embroidered with a cobra, bowed to Cordy.  She bowed and resumed her defensive stance.

Peter Woo screamed out, “Hiiiii Ya!” and aimed his fist at Cordy’s fearless face.  She deftly blocked his arm and counterpunched to his chest.  He tried again to hit her with his leg kick, but she moved and dodged it.  Cordy kept her balance instinctively.

This fighting dance went on for ten minutes of punch and counterpunch.  Woo, getting frustrated, decided to make a daring move of running at her.  She grabbed his attack arm after skillfully avoiding a blow with his fist and pulled his weight against her, forcing him to become unsteady.

Cordy seized the moment, taking advantage of Woo’s aggressiveness and his loss of balance.  She took his weight and grabbed his arm, flipping him to the floor and finishing him with a final punch.  Everyone in the room sat mesmerized at the battle of the two black belts. Woo smiled from the floor and yelled, “Enough!”  Cordy’s face changed from fearless determination to bear a radiant beaming smile.  Her hand reached out and pulled him up.   Master Wong patted Cordy on the shoulder and said, “Well done, Cordy.”

He explained, “You handled his frustration perfectly, and your patience won out.  You are learning total calm under pressure.”

She smiled at the compliment. “Thank you, Master Wong.” She looked at her watch and moaned, “Oh no, I’m going to be late.”

Woo laughed, “She’s focused when she is fighting me but forgets the time.”

Cordy playfully rapped him on the head and quickly ran out the door.

Cordy drove her car onto the main street and into bumper-to-bumper traffic.  She mumbled, “The traffic is awful today.  Let’s take the short cut.” She turned right and a row of brick houses with well-kept lawns flew by.  An older woman walked her Doberman and tiny poodle down the sidewalk.  Children were playing on the front-yard lawns.  Cordy turned on the radio, and a singer crooned, “I need an angel like you” while the rock-and-roll tune blared.

Out of nowhere, a screaming, half-naked woman in her twenties ran in front of the car ahead of Cordy’s.  Cordy slammed on the brakes to avoid hitting the stopped car.  She watched as the surreal scene played out before her.

The young woman screamed and pleaded to the driver of the car, banging on his shut window, “He is going to kill me.  Help me!”

The terrified driver of the car swerved around and sped past her.  Cordy grabbed her cell phone and called emergency services.

“A woman is in distress on Hobby Lane. Send the police.”
