Love is the drudgery of changing nappies,
clearing floors and shaping your lips to speak.
Love is telling a favourite story, twice
a night for fourteen months or more.
Love is smiling full of joy, for as long as
they can see you on that first school day.
Love is saying no and saying it with penalties,
for as long as they are willing to listen.
Love is caring through slammed shut doors,
piles of clothes, unruly drawers, unwashed
socks, and smells of God knows what.
Love is knowing that one day soon, they’ll be
utterly dependent on someone other than you.
Love is waiting, hoping, believing they’ll avoid
the mistakes you made, or their opposites
and when they don’t, realising it’s in their genes
and refusing even to think. I told you so.
Love is listening to their peak life exploits without
wishing they were happening to you instead.
Love is what is returned tenfold and more, when
they recognise the contribution you made.
Love is exactly and totally what it takes to be,
a parent, who vows never to become a burden
