Tin Foil Hat – An interview with author Justin Bauer

BooksGoSocial

Today we are chatting with Justin Bauer the author of Tin Foil Hat

Tell us something unexpected about yourself!

I've played drums in a musical theatre production at the London Palladium.

What novels affected you the most growing up?

The Great Gatsby, Kill Your Friends, 1984, Asimov… Lots of Orwellian stuff, lots of comics/graphic novels.

Where did the idea for your current book come from?

Tin Foil Hat' came from my desire to write about the music industry, antisocial tendencies, and the misguided parallels between entertainment and violence. I've been interested in writing something along these lines since Marilyn Manson was wrongfully blamed for the tragedy at Columbine.

Do you think you could ever run out of ideas for books?

My physical entity will deteriorate, and in time death will make it impossible to write.

What is your routine for writing and has this method changed over the span of your career?

I aim to put down a minimum of 1,000 words per session. I'd love to claim I do this on a daily basis, but that'd be untrue. I'm pushing myself to be more consistent, and am hoping these words will serve as motivation.
During my time as an English major I had to sacrifice writing fiction for literary pursuits of a more academic nature, and only found time to write for myself between semesters. Tin Foil Hat was written, edited, and published during my time at Ohio State.

How important is marketing and social media for you?

Marketing is something I'd claim is important, but I've failed thus far to do it effectively. I'm on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Goodreads, and am trying to set the foundation for the long haul.

What advice would you have for other writers?

1. Base not the merit of your art on monetary success or social recognition.

2. Don't get it right, get it written.

3. If you don't have time to read you're unequipped to write.

What are you reading now?

I'm currently reading ‘The Girl in the Spider's Web' by David Legercrantz. I loved the original Millennium trilogy, and am just now getting around to giving this novel a chance.

What’s your next step?

Onward to the next novel! I'm 26k words into my current work in progress, and intend to wrap up the first draft before summer.
