My reason for writing this book is because I was thinking about the future ever since I read 2001, while I was studying under Paul A. M. Dirac the world leading theoretical scientist in 1968/69. He read it and we saw the movie. Neither one of us understood it so we both read it again.  At the time, I said that the computer was still in the dark ages and it would be nine centuries before they will become truly sentient.

At that time, Dirac said to me, “Maybe you can write something better.”

“Maybe!” I said, “But first I must get my Ph.D.”

Ever since then I was thinking in the back of my mind how to write a non-violent hero who proves her victory because a victory is only true if it uses non-violence in an intelligent civilization.  We need to make people feel that non-violence is a better path. Not war.  I later got my Ph.D. in 1971 after 2.5 years.  Later in the early 80s Dirac came to San Diego to visit his daughter who is at Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

He proceeds to tell me about his new interest in cosmology. He and Schrodinger founded Quantum Mechanics and both got Nobel Prizes. I was impressed with Dirac's new ideas and we collaborated. About three years later he started to get ill and died in 1984. I was very busy as a CEO of a new company that needed my immediate attention. When I retired I went back to do some work on the Science of Cosmology.  No one yet knows what 96% of the universe is, so we are still in the dark when it comes to understanding most of the universe.  I developed a new speculative theory of the cosmos to explain 70-75% of the universe and it is introduced on a simple level in my Trilogy: 30th Century.

In my opinion, living in that time can be wonderful, but like all new knowledge, it can be a double-edged sword.  We need to be careful. I see the AI as a good thing that can be more civilized than humans because it is more logical and less emotional.  I think all super intelligent life forms will want to interact to learn and gain new insights.  The AIs of the future could help humans maintain peace with interstellar civilization if we ever find them.
