“Carlo,” she sighed, as she melted into his chocolate eyes. “Carlo, Carlo, Carlo… This has been so tiring for us both. Let’s take some time and see what clarity rest may bring.”
“You are a most incredible woman, Susana. I cannot believe I allowed my life to go on these years without you by my side. Without me by your side. How could I have forgotten the magical girl who filled me years ago with promises of a secret, lost Prophecy? You filled me with its hope. I cherish you Susana, more than you can know.”
Carlo’s words touched her to the core. Never before had he spoken to her with such depth and emotion. Never before had he bared his soul as he did on this night, revealing his fears, admitting his vulnerability.
The Carlo she’d once known had been bold and confident. With that came aloofness and distance — a self-centered hedonist hungry mostly for pleasure. But this was not the same man. What had caused his shift, she wondered. Had age finally taken hold and with it maturity?
Or was she witnessing what Mary had foreseen, the profound transformation destined for all those who chanced upon the Treasure?
For Susan’s part, despite just having wrestled with Carlo—and perhaps even because of it—she couldn’t deny the passion he evoked from her. Nor the joy he inspired. Not even the love.
How many times in her youth had she read and re-read her professor's letter, reciting the few quotations aloud to herself, looking for meaning, seeking to
understand their cryptic words? And suddenly in the light of Carlo’s beautiful tribute, Susan’s favorite verse from the Gospel of J sprung forth anew,
Our Treasure shall find its way into the hands of the Two who are as One. man and woman. equal unto each other. whole each and as one.
Was it conceivable that she and Carlo were the Two who are as One? Could they be the ones Mary had envisioned so long ago? The two who would receive the wisdom of the Sacred Orb and the Magdalene Prophecy? The ones to herald the Second Coming of Christ?
